Abstract

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a serious global psychological health problem, especially in young adults. The relationship between BPD and quality of life (QOL) has been established in the literature. However, there is very limited research on factors of BPD and individual domains of QOL. Therefore, this study is aimed to investigate the probable influence of factors of BPD on QOL and its domains. Further, gender differences in the relationship between BPD and QOL were also under consideration. A quantitative survey was conducted to collect the data through standardized tools (BPI and WHOQOL-Bref) from 700 young adults. The study focused on the age-group of 18-25 years which is considered the most potential group of the population for having BPD. The students, enrolled in different universities of Lahore city, followed the inclusion criteria of the study, were the participants of the study. The impact of factors of BPD on QOL and its domains were assessed through multiple regression analysis. The results of the study have revealed that overall QOL and its domains were significantly influenced through BPD and its factors. However, the environmental and social domains of QOL showed insignificant results based on gender. BPD factors Identity diffusion, and impulsivity significantly influenced all domains of QOL in males. Whereas, impulsivity showed significant results in females. These findings revealed that the prevalence of BPD and its factors influenced QOL and its domain overall. While significant differences (p <0.05) can be observed based on gender. These findings identified influential factors of BPD affecting QOL of adults.
