Funding distribution from foundations to grassroots SOs: An Exploratory Examination of Chinese Grant-making Foundations
Abstract
The majority of Chinese grassroots SOs face a crisis of survival due to the severe shortage of funding. Thus, the emergency and rise of grant-making foundations in China after 2008 Wenchuan earthquake have been placed great expectations by grassroots SOs, especially with the decline and even disappearance of overseas foundations in China. This study examines the number of Chinese grant-making foundations and whether they make grants to grassroots SOs through in-depth interviews and my anecdotal experience over the past ten years. Influential domestic foundations are also applied as cases to analyze their funding distribution. I argue that the number of Chinese grant-making foundations is not only very small, and that these grant-making foundations do not include grassroots SOs into their funding game, which is far from being a source of funding for grassroots SOs.
