Social Integration of Chinese Naturalized Athletes
Abstract
This article examines aspects of social integration amongst naturalized Chinese athletes under the broad rubric of globalization and sport. Using social mobility theory as theoretical support, we explore the social-mobility motivations of athletes, and examine aspects of Chinese-athlete naturalization and integration across social, cultural, and economic dimensions. We argue for increased attention to integration by emphasizing rights, responsibilities, and awareness of identity and loyalty issues. Our study concludes by endorsing the maximization of positive elements in Chinese culture as a means to successfully integrating naturalized athletes.
