Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) has evolved from a theoretical ambition into one of the most consequential technologies of the modern era, reshaping industries, institutions, and everyday life. This review synthesises the foundations, capabilities, applications, and societal implications of artificial intelligence, tracing its trajectory from early symbolic reasoning and the Turing test to contemporary machine learning, deep learning, and large language models. The paper documents, with quantitative evidence, the rapid growth of the global AI market and the accelerating adoption of AI across business functions and generative tools. It then examines the principal application domains, including healthcare, education, finance, and productivity, and analyses the associated opportunities, risks, and governance challenges, spanning algorithmic bias, fairness, explainability, safety, and employment effects. The review concludes that the central challenge of the coming decade is not the expansion of AI capability but the construction of a responsible, transparent, and human-centred governance framework that can capture the benefits of the technology while managing its risks. Practical recommendations for developers, organisations, and policymakers are proposed.
