Abstract

Abstract

The objective of the study was to find out the effectiveness of the task-based language learning approach on developing English speaking skill. The modern technology of communication has shaped the world into a global village, where English language has become prominent. Now-a-days, it is considered difficult to be successful in the world of global village without competency in English language as it is being used all over the world as a first, second, and foreign language. English is official and second language of Pakistan and has a prominent place. The competence in English language is essential, but unfortunately after learning English many years in schools, majority of students can’t speak English well as our educational system does not focus on oracy skills i.e listening and speaking. Traditional methods are being used in teaching and students tend to be more accurate instead of fluent in English. The reason behind this problem is the approach of teachers’ to teach the English. Modern world is getting benefits from the latest teaching methodologies, but Pakistani teachers are still using the same obsolete teaching methods like Grammar Translation Method and Lecture Method etc. By using these methods, students might remember grammatical rules very well, but they seem struggling hard when applying these rules in their speech. The researches in Second Language Acquisition recommend that Task Based Learning has more potential than traditional methods and it offers both output and input skills thus it looks realistic to adopt a innovative approach, which would be well suitable for the Pakistani students. The present study investigated the impact of task-based teaching by employing a quasi experimental design. Two groups were taken as control and experimental group in natural setting.
